Enjoy themed art-making activities for the whole family in a museum setting lead by the DCWM education team. Practice your craft-making skills while surrounded by art, and take a work of your own art home with you!

BearCat Family Friday is always free for children ages 17 and under, free for DCWM members, and free with paid admission.

Enjoy an easy-paced walk with seasoned birder and bird bander Anne Leight to spot and identify the many resident and migratory birds of the Preserve. Some binoculars are available to borrow. Join Ranger Eric for an after-hours trail walk to look for and learn about the nocturnal critters of the Preserve! Wildlife seen on past walks have included bats, ringtails, foxes, skunks, javelinas, deer, owls, scorpions, insects, and other cool creepy crawlies! Please bring your own flashlights and blacklights if you have them, but some will be available to borrow. Please carry your own water. Trails are rated as easy and are mostly flat, but there may be some uneven or sandy surfaces. We will hike about 1-1.5 miles.

Join Ranger Eric for a guided bird walk to look and listen for resident and migrant species within the diverse desert riparian habitat of the Hassayampa River Preserve. Along the way, we will discuss eBird and citizen science, how to identify birds by sight and sound, and about the behavioral and ecological traits that make them unique. Some binoculars are available to borrow. Please carry ample water for yourself and wear sturdy footwear and sun protection. We will walk on mostly flat, but occasionally uneven or sandy terrain for 1-2 miles, and go for 2-3 hours depending on interest of participants.

Join Ranger Eric to learn about native desert plant options for your garden to attract and help pollinators such as hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and other insects. Some free printed resources will be available to take with you. After you check out this discovery station, we encourage you to check out the trails beyond the Preserve Visitor Center to check out the lush vegetation and abundant wildlife!

Join Ranger Eric for a guided walk along the river and lake trails to explore the fascinating world of dragonflies and damselflies. We’ll also see other aquatic and riparian wildlife along the way! Please bring ample water and wear protective clothing and/or sunscreen, and wear sturdy footwear. We will walk about 0.5-1 mile on mostly flat, but occasionally sandy or uneven trails. The walk may be shortened if extreme heat forecasted. Binoculars are available to borrow at the Visitor Center.

During this demo, Judee will explain her process and materials, as well as demonstrate how she accomplishes the intricate beading technique that holds the jewelry together as a piece of art.

Mexican Folk Art: Artesanía del Pueblo exhibition we have on view in our Cultural Crossroads Learning Center. Made possible by the Mexican Consulate in Phoenix, the Tuscan Museum of Art, The Heard Museum, ASU Art Museum, Amerind Museum, and several private collectors to share the tradition of Mexican folk art from various regions of Mexico from the past through current date. This exhibition is on view through April 28, 2024.
