Commemorate America’s 250th Birthday and the start of the Cactus League spring training games with sports photographer Jean Fruth and an intimate behind-the-lens look at the country’s favorite pastime, baseball. As one of the few women to cover the Majors, Fruth brings a fresh perspective the field.
After capturing the attention of Major League Baseball with her front page–worthy shots, Fruth spent a decade covering the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics. Named a Sony Artisan of Imagery, she built a storied career documenting the sport from youth games to professional pennant races around the world. Drawing on her extensive interviews with baseball legends, the all-women league that inspired the film “A League of Their Own,” and the trailblazers of today, Fruth paints a vivid picture of the sport’s rich history and exciting future.
Together with her partner, former Baseball Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson, Fruth formed the non-profit organization Grassroots Baseball. She has produced three photography books: Grassroots Baseball: Where Legends Begin (2019), Grassroots Baseball: Route 66 (2022), and her most recent, Grassroots Baseball Women: See Her Be Her (2024). Jean’s documentary SEE HER BE HER, follows the lives of women who are playing the game at its highest level in the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, Japan, South Korea, Cuba, and Uganda.
