Join Ranger Kevin as we casually walk the grounds of the Preserve at the tail-end of another desert day, stopping to observe plants and animals while conversing about the importance of riparian areas generally (and Hassayampa specifically) in conserving and protecting a wide range of wildlife. Length of hike is roughly two miles. Trails are rated easy, with very little loose rock, uneven terrain or elevation change; however, there are some sandy areas that make walking a bit more difficult. Please wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, bring plenty of water, and a flashlight. Restrooms are available near the Nature Center. No pets, please.

Join Adam Stein (Arizona State University) and Chrissy Kondrat (Arizona Game & Fish Department) to observe and learn about the Hassayampa MAPS bird banding station, a scientific study involving the marking of individual birds in order to learn about their health, migration, and species distribution across the continent! You’ll get to see birds up close as the researchers collect data on these interesting animals down at the picnic area near the start of the trails. In addition, it is eBird Fall Global Big Day, a 24-hour period where you can help with citizen science by reporting the numbers of birds you see at each location you visit throughout the day to the eBird website or app.

Join Ranger Eric for a guided bird walk to look and listen for resident and migrant species within the diverse desert riparian habitat of the Hassayampa River Preserve. Today is the fall version of eBird Global Big Day, a 24-hour citizen science event dedicated to getting birders into the field across the world to count birds of all species! This is scheduled annually during the peak of spring and fall migrations, so there is the possibility to see high species diversity and rarities! Along the way, we will discuss eBird and citizen science, how to identify birds by sight and sound, and about the behavioral and ecological traits that make them unique. Some binoculars are available to borrow. Please wear sturdy footwear, sun protection and carry ample water for yourself.

Would you like to learn more about birdwatching and community science? Join Ranger Eric for a "Big Sit" style bird count at the picnic area in the palm grove behind the Visitor Center as we learn about birds and learn about community science, using eBird. We will discuss basic bird identification tips and counting methods. Some binoculars are available to borrow. This program is geared towards all physical abilities and ages, and the trail down to the picnic area is barrier-free. Picnic tables are available to sit at and other benches are located around Palm Lake Trail nearby.

Join Ranger Eric for an after-hours trail walk to look for and learn about the nocturnal critters of the Preserve! Wildlife seen on past walks have included bats, ringtails, foxes, skunks, javelinas, deer, owls, scorpions, insects, and other cool creepy crawlies! Please bring your own flashlights and blacklights if you have them, but some will be available to borrow. Please carry your own water. Trails are rated as easy and are mostly flat, but there may be some uneven or sandy surfaces. We will hike about 1-1.5 miles.
